The RISIS Methods in Action (MiA) series is meant to provide practical examples of how methodological problems in data analysis could be addressed in specific instances of scholarly research.

To this aim, it will be generally based on an example of a scholarly published paper. Participants will be asked to replicate the study and discuss possible alternatives and limitations of the adopted approach.

Three RISIS Methods in Actions will be organized every year, indicatively in October, January and March. All MiA session will be fully on-line.

They are planned within the WP7 activities. For submitting proposals and any information on these courses please contact: benedetto.lepori@usi.ch

Each session of Methods in Action will include the following elements:

  • A presentation session (indicatively 3h) where the methodological problem will be presented, how it has been addressed in the usage considered and potential problems and alternatives. Moreover, the relevant RISIS dataset and the underlying data will be presented.

  • At the end of this session, participants will be assigned a task, including replication of the original results and exploring potential alternatives.

  • A discussion session (indicatively 3h) after one week time, where the participants will be asked to present their results and question, which will be discussed collectively.

  • A follow-up session after two months where participants will have the possibility of presenting applications of the methods for their research and receive further guidance. The session might be organized in individual slots during half a day.

  • A virtual environment for Q&A.

For the academic year 2021/2022, three sessions are foreseen:

January 2022: Dealing with heteroscedasticity and other issues in regressions about scaling

March 2022: Matching techniques for treatment effect analysis
